from the Gazette:

The sudden and serious illness of Mr. George W. Bemis, which as noted in the last evening's Gazette, came to a sad termination last evening, death coming to him, leaving its heavy shadow on a broken family circle, and a larger circle of relatives and friends. Mr. Bemis has for two or three years past stomach difficulty, which at time would throw him into spasms of severe suffering, it was at one of these sudden attacks which came last Monday, and which rapidly and surely did its work of death.

Mr. Bemis was born in Hamilton, Madison county, New York, July 31, 1821, and remained in that State until the winter of 1813-14, when he came to this county, and after teaching school near this city for some months, returned to New York State, and in August 1844, married Miss Sophia J., daughter of Mr. Varney Bump., of Alabama, Genesee county. That fall Mr. and Mrs. Bemis came to this county for permanent settlement, fixing upon a house in the town of Rock, and coming in possession of a large farm there. , upon which they lived until about twelve years ago, when the family moved into this city, and have resided ever since, though Mr. Bemis continued to own and manage the farm in Rock.

He was a hard working man, and as far as moral characteristic are concerned there are few better men. He was a mode of integrity and genuine manly qualities, and all who came in contact with his life , respected and esteemed him highly. He was modest an retiring, and and aside from holding some official positions in the town in which he lived, was never pressed into any public prominence. He was widely known though, throughout this county, and the reputation and friendships builded up by this quiet, yet earnest life, now call forth many expressions of honor to his memory and sorrow at his death.

He leaves, besides his wife, two daughters, Mrs. M.J. DeLent, and Mrs. William S. Bemis. He also has a number of brothers and other relatives living in and about Janesville...
