Charles R. Smith is Laid to Rest
Retired Planter, 86, died Sunday After Being Ill for Long Time

Funeral services for Charles R. Smith, 86, retired Lowndes planter, and financier were held from the chapel of Gunter Funeral Home at 3 o'clock this afternoon.

Mr. Smith died at 8 o'clock Sunday morning at a local hospital in Meridian which he entered a short while ago. He had been in declining health for several years and the end was not unexpected.

Mr. Smith was born near Artesia June 9, 1855, a member of one of the outstanding pioneer families in Lowndes county, his father J. M.L. Smith, having been a representative in the state legislature after the Civil War and also having been a member of the faculty of the University of Alabama.

Mr. Smith spent his latter years in California, returning to Columbus five years ago to be with his only daughter, Mrs. Saunders Wilburn and her family in his declining years.

Funeral services this afternoon were conducted by Dr. T. D. Batemen, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church. Interment was at Friendship Cemetery.

Those serving as pallbearers were Hugh Stiles and Earl Cook of Starkville; Lucian Smith of West Point; Asa Watson, Jr., of Strong Station; T. Bailey Hardy, Arrington Johnson,
Willis Pope and Willis McClanahan of Columbus.

Besides his daughter and her family, he is survived by a number of nieces and nephews and a large family connection.
