After graduating from college, Wallace joined the Army Air Corps and trained in several air fields in the United States with all kinds of planes. Prior to the bombing of Pearl Harbor, he joined the AF 28th Bomber Squadron. Stationed at Clark Field in the Philippines, he was wounded during the initial attack by the Japanese. After hospitalization and recovery, he was transferred to ground forces. At this time he was under the command of General Sharp in Mindanao, P.I. When Mindanao fell, he was imprisoned by the Japanese at Camp Davao. In 1944 the Japanese began moving the prisoners of war to Japan. Wallace was on an unmarked ship August 20, 1944 along with 800 other POW's. American submarines thinking the ship carried escaping Japanese bombed and sank it. Only 76 prisoners escaped. Wallace was not one of them. Over the several years Wallace was held prisoner only two postcards were received from him and these were nearly two years apart. Ten words were allowed in the messages he sent.

Lt. Churchill appears Tablets of the Missing Manila American Cemetery and Memorial Manila National Capital, Philippines. His memorial Mountain View Cemetery Oakland Alameda County California is a cenotaph his body was never recovered.

Shinyo Maru was a Japanese cargo steamer during the Second World War. She was one of the hell ships, used to transport prisoners of war. Shinyo Maru was sunk 7 September 1944 near Liley, Sindangan, Province, Mindanao Philippines by the USS Paddle, SS 263. There were approximately 750 American prisoners of war aboard. Some Japanese guards shot prisoners as they struggled from the holds or were in the water; 688 died when the ship sank, leaving only 82 survivors.
