Arlene Gaslin, 98, formerly of St. Francis died Tuesday, July 22, 2014 at the Benedictine Living Community in St. Peter. Funeral service will be 3:00 p.m. Sunday, July 27, 2014 at St. Francis United Methodist Church in St. Francis with Pastor Kevin Coder officiating. Burial will be held in the Oak Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. Sunday at the church. Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm is in charge of the arrangements.
Arlene was born March 23, 1916 in Burns Township, Anoka County, daughter of Sam and Laura (McCallum) Wirz. Arlene graduated valedictorian of St. Francis High School in 1934. She attended Anoka Normal Teachers Training, and taught country school in Burns Township. She was a substitute teacher for many years at St. Francis Public Schools and also drove school bus. On June 25, 1936, she married Merle Gaslin at her parents' home. Arlene and Merle had two children, Bonnie and Duane. They farmed Merle's home farm until they retired and moved to Crosslake, MN in 1976. They enjoyed fishing, hunting, snowmobiling and working together at their church. They took many trips throughout the U.S., including Alaska and Hawaii, and to Europe. Arlene was the leader of the St. Francis Go-Getters 4-H Club for several years. She served the Anoka County Red Cross and General Federation of Women's Clubs of Minnesota. She was superintendent of the St. Francis United Methodist Church Sunday School, officer in Ladies Aid and charter member of the Anoka County Garden Club. She sewed as a volunteer for the state hospital in Brainerd. Merle passed away in February 1987. Arlene continued to travel, taking trips to Europe, Australia, Egypt, China and Aruba. She went ice fishing and deer hunting until she was 80. She married Cliff Mansmith on June 23, 1998. In 2002, they moved to Albert Lea to be close to Cliff's family. Cliff passed away in October 2006 and Arlene moved to St. Peter, MN.
She is survived by her daughter, Bonnie Compart, of Nicollet, MN; daughter-in-law, Gerri (Dennis) Hilgers, of Roseville, MN; stepson, Ron (Joan) Mansmith, of Apple Valley, MN; stepdaughter, Bernice (Ron) Landburg, of Winter Haven, FL; seven grandchildren: Marc (Peggy) Compart, Dean (Kaye) Compart, Jim (Diana) Compart, Heidi (Ken) Baker, Chris (Rochelle) Compart, DeAnne (Christopher Sprung) Hilgers, and Kathi (Kevin) Carver; 5 step-grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husbands Merle Gaslin and Cliff Mansmith; son, Duane Gaslin; son-in-law, Richard Compart; sisters, Dorothy Leathers and Doris Wirz; and brother, Lloyd Wirz.
