Physician, poet, journalist, politician, and advocate for Puerto Rico's independence. He was raised in the island and continued his medical studies in Spain. Upon his return, he helped organize El Grito de Lares and was among the many individuals incarcerated in Arecibo in 1868. Padilla Alfonso was persecuted by the Spanish government due to his patriotic verses. He founded the Puerto Rican chapter of the Sociedad Económica de los Amigos del País and practiced medicine in Vega Baja, where he saw many patients that could not pay for his services. After El Grito de Lares he used the pseudonym "El Caribe" to keep writing for different local newspapers. At the end of his life he wrote "Canto a Puerto Rico". It is said that the Puertorrican flag was shown in a photograph for the very first time at the time of his funeral.
