Thomas Zachariah Hanks was born in Virginia to Joshua and Rosamond "Ruth" Bryant Hanks. Theirs was a very large family, with at least 15 children and possibly 18 children. Thomas's father was very ambitious as a farmer and land-owner, a Justice of the Peace in Grayson, VA, Sheriff of Grayson county and captain in the militia.

Thomas married Susanna Rector in Grayson, Virginia in 1810. (Another source has Raleigh, Wales Co., NC). This couple also had several children: Andrew Jackson Hanks; Benjamin Lafayette Hanks; George Washington Hanks; Ruth Hanks; Jesse Hanks, 1811-1892; David King Hanks, 1818-1880; Elizabeth B.Hanks, 1821-1903, who married Andrew J. Thrailkill; Thomas Jefferson Hanks,1824-1918; and William Hanks, b. 1829.

US Census 1830 has the family's residence as Jefferson Township, Saline County, Missouri. This was a heavily forested area was sparsely inhabited by homesteaders and more by Native Americans.

November 9, 1832, Thomas, or Zachariah as he was called, died at age 46, leaving his wife with several young children. The place of his death was "Missouri City". His wife Susan Rector Hanks lived another 47 years and is buried at Malvern, Mills County, IA.
