George served as a Private in Company F of the 11th Vermont infantry from September 1, 1862 to January 10, 1863. In December, 1863, he mustered in to the 1st Vermont Cavalry, serving in Companies A, B, and I before mustering out August 9, 1865. He is identified as George F. Belknap in some records, and George W. Belknap in others.
Togus, Maine Soldiers' Home' March - October 1894
George was living in New Haven, Connecticut and working as a cook before he went to live at the Soldiers Home at Bennington in 1898. The death announcement in The Bennington Evening Banner, January 7, 1905 states that George was "admitted from Coventry (Vermont)." George was single. Probate records state he left no heirs.
