On February 18, 1862, Gilman mustered in as a Private in Company A, 8th Regiment, Vermont infantry. He re-enlisted in January, 1864, and received finger wounds near Winchester, Virginia in September, 1864. Gilman was promoted to Corporal in May, 1865 before mustering out June 28, 1865.

Some transcripts of Gilman's death record indicate he was a widowed jeweler. United States Census records indicate he was working as a farm laborer in Montgomery, Vermont.
