On October 4, 1862, Barney mustered in as a Private in Company E, 12th Regiment, Vermont infantry. He was discharged due to disability from typhoid fever in November 1862. In July, 1863, Barney mustered in again, serving as a member of Company L of the 11th Vermont Infantry. He transferred to Company C before mustering out August 15, 1865.

Barney was living in Topsham, Vermont when he married Mary Ann Bohonon in Washington, Vermont on November 15, 1869. Their marriage ended in divorce five years later.

In 1894, Barney moved to the Vermont Soldiers Home in Bennington, Vermont.
