John built the New Hope Presbyterian Church in Webster County, Mississippi in 1848. It had a second floor which was used for Masonic Lodge no. 242 meeting, of which John was a member.
He died May 1, 1874 in Chickasaw Co, MS and was given a Masonic burial in Columbus, MS. He was survived by his wife, Nancy Jane Saffell.

He enrolled at Saltillo, MS on Aug 19, 1862, and went home without being discharged during the retreat from Abbeville, MS during early December of 1862. It is unknown as to why but family tradition relates he died in 1872 from his war wounds. If this is the case he probably did not desert but was older, wounded and hospitalized. The fact that his son William lost both arms in the war and was disabled may have been a factor as well. Whatever the case his records reflect absence without leave. He received 300 dollars to go in KIdd's place.
