He attended Phillips Exeter Academy in Exeter, N.H. and later became alumni association president and a trustee. In 1959 he retired as vice president of the Elk River Coal and Lumber Co., with offices in Philadelphia. He had assisted in the founding of the Rotary Club of Philadelphia and was the club's last surviving charter member. His public services include a number of years on the Board of Trade of Philadelphia and a term as director of the Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce and Board of Trade.
He was a founder-member of the Maryland Society of Pennsylvania and a director of the organization for many years. He was a fifty-year member of the Union League of Philadelphia and a member of the Kindergarten Club. Other affiliations include the Pennsylvania Society of Sons of the Revolution and the society's Color Guard; the Penn Club; the Merion Cricket Club and numerous historical, gencalogical and trade societies.
He married the late Jean Stockton Huse of Annapolis. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Ann Stockton Little, Hendersonville, NC, a son, James W., Southampton; two grandsons; one great-grandson; a sister, Mrs. a. McComb Campau of Detroit, Michigan.
Services were private at the family's convenience.
