A resident of Topinabee since 1979, after moving from Ann Arbor, Karen was born Sept. 14, 1942 in Detroit, the daughter of Kenneth and Helen (Wilder) Chappell. On Oct. 3, 1964 in Farmington, she married James Pearson, who preceded her in death in 1993. She was a 1964 graduate of Michigan State University, and taught for several years before stopping to raise her family. In 1985, she returned to teaching at Inverness Elementary School in Cheboygan. She taught students with special needs, until her retirement in 2001. She enjoyed traveling, walking and was an avid sports' fan of the Red Wings, the Tigers, the Lions and the Spartans.
Surviving are her two children, a daughter, Kelly Pearson of Clawson and a son, Kevin (Elizabeth) Pearson of Virginia; and a granddaughter, Margo Sena of Ypsilanti.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, and her brother, James Chappell.
A private graveside service has been held at Burt-Mullett Cemetery in Topinabee.
