Peter VanLuyster Marks, 84 of Harrisonburg, passed away July 20, 2014 at Bridgewater Home.

Mr. Marks was born November 1, 1929 in Babylon, NY, to the late William Bennett and Amanda Boyd Marks.

He graduated from Newtown High School in Queens, NY and later from the Long Island Institute of Agriculture, majoring in animal husbandry. Mr. Marks served in the Korean War with the 11th United States Army Airborne. He later worked in the beef cattle industry in both Maryland and Virginia, pursued a 10 year career at WSVA radio and TV as an account executive, and then worked as a sales associate for AFLAC, for 30 plus years, before retiring. Mr. Marks enjoyed neighbors and started the neighborhood watch on Shenandoah Avenue and also volunteered with the Harrisonburg Fire Department and Rescue Squad for several years. He was one of the original members of the Harrisonburg Citizen Advisory Board.

Mr. Marks is survived by his wife, Greta Garber Marks; daughters, Julie Walthall & husband, Clay, New Market, Jill Yamane & husband, Retired Colonel Grover Yamane, San Antonio, Texas; grandchildren, Kylan Wright, Max Yamane, Miles Yamane, Ben Walthall, Stephen Walthall, Katie Walthall; a number of nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, William B. Marks; and sisters Katherine Tapp and Elizabeth Norton.

A memorial service will be held 7:00pm Monday July 28, 2014 at the Kyger Funeral Home Chapel in Harrisonburg. The Rev. Hollis Dodge will conduct the service. Family will receive friends following the service at the funeral home. Burial will be at a later date at Rest Haven Memorial Gardens in Harrisonburg.
