Hortense M. Anderson was born May 13, 1905 in Galesburg, Illinois to Charles and Anna (Anderson)Nelson. She was educated in Galesburg schools and attended two years of business school on Chicago. She married Jack A. Anderson in Chicago on June 15, 1929 in Chicago. The couple owned their own wholesale and retail dairy business and operated the J & H Speed Wash. Hortense was also employed many years in the offices of Halsam Products. While living in Chicago she was a member of Concordia Lutheran Church and the church choir. She was also a member and past president of the Lakeview American Legion Post Auxilliary and she and her husband were members of Svithiod Singing Club.
They retired in 1968 and moved to Prophetstown, and for a number of years were active in fund-raising for winning Wheels. She was a member of the former Prophetstown-Lyndon Birthday Club and the First Lutheran Church, Prophetstown.
Hortense passed away November 30, 1994 at Prophets Riverview Center where she was presently living. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. at First Lutheran Church on Saturday, December 3, 1994 with Rev. Jeffery Clements, Pastor, officiating. Burial was in Riverside Cemetery, Prophetstown. Visitation was Friday from 2-5 p.m. at the Gardner Funeral Home, Prophetstown.
She is survived by one daughter, Connie (Allen) Gibson of Prophetstown; three grandsons, Dale (Kim) Gibson of Mason City, IA, Neil (Pat)Gibson of Davenport, IA, and John (Donna) Gibson of Prophetstown; nine grandchildren and a sister-in-law, Valma Nelson of Kewanee, IL. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1977, one daughter and three brothers.
