WALLACE C. BARKER
August 23, 1923 ~ July 17, 2014
Wallace C. Barker, World War II Combat Veteran Anzio Survivor, lifelong Battle Ground, Washington resident, former Battle Ground High School German teacher, coach, and dahlia farmer, passed away at the age of 90 on Thursday, July 17, 2014. He was born August 23, 1923.
Wally graduated from both the University of Washington and Eastern Washington State University, both in Washington State. He attended Stanford School of German Studies, Bad Boll Germany; West Berlin German University, Deutsche Sommer Schule Am Pazifik, West Germany, and many other colleges and scholarship programs.
Wally was drafted while attending the University of Washington and spent the entire time on the front lines with the 45th Thunderbird Infantry Division, attached to the 157th Regimental Combat Team. He survived six major battles and two amphibious assaults. He was also one of the very first combat troops in to liberate Dachau Concentration Camp. He was a lifelong advocate of Veterans for Peace.
Wally loved his students, devoting many summers taking them throughout Europe, teaching them their cultures, music and history. Many of his former students kept in contact with him over the years, and he still had an uncanny ability to remember many of his students' names.
He had a passion for his dahlia garden, growing and selling them since the early '50s.
Survivors include his sons, Bruce (Kathy) and Jeff (Liz); daughters, Bonnie (Terry) Stimac and Terri Glass; four grandchildren, Tara Glass, Emily Barker, Jamie and Chris Stimac; niece, Debbie Dollar; and nephew, David Spicer.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Bernice; son, Steven; and sister, Bea Spicer.
A graveside service with military honors was on Saturday, July 26th, 2014 at Park Hill Cemetery, 5915 E. Mill Plain Blvd., Vancouver, Washington, with a memorial service at Battle Ground United Methodist Church, 10300 NE 199th St., Battle Ground, WA. Both were open to the public.
Memorial contributions may be made in honor of Wally Barker to the Teachers Make a Difference Program at Battle Ground School District in Battle Ground, Washington.
