Janie Corrine Wittman, age 89, of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., passed quietly in her sleep at home on Thursday, Oct. 25, 2012. She was born the fifth of seven children to John Clayton and Katie Lee (Varner) McIntyre in Evergreen, Ala.

Janie was raised in Mobile, Ala., where she met her future husband, Howard. Howard was an Air Force man and Janie faithfully followed wherever he was stationed around the world meeting many wonderful lifetime friends and raising their three children, Sharon, Clayton and Trela. When Howard retired, they decided to return to the Eglin Air Force Base area which they had fallen in love with years before. Janie returned to teaching kindergarten children and retired after a long career in Okaloosa County. After her husband passed in 1978 and she later retired from teaching, Janie became more active in Gold Star Wives and DAVA #72 by becoming treasurers both locally and at the regional level, thus fulfilling her love of traveling with friends.

As Janie's faith was important to her, she became a charter member of Wright Baptist Church in Fort Walton Beach early when the church just formed and instilled a love of God and good Christian music in her children's lives. Janie was blessed once again with the love of a truly great man, Bill Thackham, a wonderful neighbor, and traveled to many places together before he passed in 2005.

Survivors include daughter, Sharon (William G) James and Sharon's two children (grands); two grandchildren (great-grands); and one great-grandchild (great-great-grand); son, H. Clayton Van Wittman, his two sons and one grandchild; and daughter, Trela Sexton, her six children, and her five grandchildren.

Many thanks and hugs to the people in Janie's life who made her life enjoyable after she was diagnosed with Alzheimer's, our friend, Tricilla, Tana, John and many others at Gentiva; Tracy, Kathy, and many others at Emerald Coast Hospice.

A celebration of Janie's life will be held later in November at Wright Baptist Church. As Janie wished to help further research into the causes and effects of Alzheimer's upon the body, she will not be with us during this celebration in body but in spirit. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Alzheimer's Association in Janie's name.

You may express condolences and share life stories which included Janie that you enjoyed, in the guestbook at http://obits.nwfdailynews.com/obituaries/nwfdailynews/.
