Mary Maxwell Gates distinguished herself in so many ways that even a long list of her accomplishments would not fully sum up her importance as a leader in this community.
She was a devoted mother who raised a family while engaging in a host of community activities.
At the University of Washington, she studied to be a teacher, taught briefly in Bremerton and eventually returned to her alma mater as president of its Board of Regents. The daughter of a bank vice president, Mary Gates became the first woman elected to his bank's board of directors.
Like her mother and father, Willard and Adelle Maxwell , she deeply involved herself in raising money to help meet the needs of her community and she was the first woman to serve as president of King County's United Way.
Mary Gates used such positions to advance a philosophy of love, patience and generosity. Remarks following her death last Friday are testimony to that:
''She was always seeking harmony and compromise; she did not have a mean bone in her body,'' observed University of Washington President William Gerberding. Mayor Norm Rice noted, ''Mary Gates is irreplaceable. The contributions that she has made to this community, state and region are far too many to enumerate.''
A fitting epitaph for this remarkable woman came from long-time friend, the Rev. Dr. Dale Turner, who for years served as pastor at University Congregational Church, where Gates and her family worshiped. Said Rev. Turner of Mary Gates, ''She never met an unimportant person.''
Mary Maxwell Gates will be missed.
