William was the son of William H. Dutches and Helen L. Dutches, dear brother of George, Frank, and Brenda Dutches of Hawthorne New Jersey. He graduated from Hawthorne High School and enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps on July 22 1964 in New York, NY. In Vietnam he was assigned to and served with Company G, 2d Battalion, 9th Marines, 3d MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

During the month of June the Battalion conducted operations in their area of responsibility south of the Da Nang Military Complex in Quang Nam Province. On June 14, a platoon from Company G was on patrol 3 kilometers northeast of Hoi An when the men were hit with a heavy volume of small arms fire by and enemy who quickly broke contact and fled. The hostile fire resulted in LCpl George Dutches being killed, and another Marines being wounded.
