Ordained a priest in 1937 and graduated in civil and canon law at the Pontifical Lateran University in Rome, Tonini was Vice Rector of the Seminary of Piacenza, Teacher, Spiritual Assistant of the groups of Italian Catholic University Federation and director of the diocesan weekly "Il Nuovo Giornale". In 1969, Pope Paul VI appointed him Bishop of Macerata and Tolentino and apostolic administrator of Recanati, Cingoli, Treia. On 22 November, 1975 he was appointed Archbishop of Ravenna and Bishop of Cervia. Since 1991, he was also a television personality and a highly regarded commentator of modern catechesis. In the consistory of 26 November 1994, Pope John Paul II created him cardinal of the title of the Most Holy Redeemer in Val Melaina. He wrote several essays, including "La finanza che serve. Dialogo sul denaro, l'economia e il futuro" which earned him a degree honoris causa in Economics and International Management from Libera Università degli Studi in Rome for the work of high popularization and laborious commitment to the service of a more humane economy and for contributions to the theme of the relationship between ethics and economics. He died at the age of 99 as a result of complications due to his health condition.
