Staff Sgt. Paul Velazquez of San Diego believed in freedom. He lived it, he breathed it and then he died for it. He was always a protector, generous and loving, always trying to keep his family close to him.

Though he was born in Tennessee, he grew up in San Diego. He was due to return to his home near Fort Sill, to see his new baby born in June. He attended Mira Mesa High School, where he was part of the wrestling team, as well as the drama club. After school, he worked at the local Jack in the Box.

He had been part of the Fort Sill community for 10 years, and was laid to rest in the post cemetery with full military honors. His widow, Mary, was given three final mementos of her husband, a Purple Heart, a Bronze Star and the flag that had covered his casket. He leaves behind his wife, his son, two daughters, and his parents among others.

He was killed in an attack on a CH-47 Chinook helicopter near Fallujah, Iraq at age 29.
