Lillian Marian Schwartz 91, of Morristown New Jersey and Boyton Beach Florida, died peacefully in her home Sunday, September 30, 2012.

Born August 14, 1921 in Newark, New Jersey to Margaret nee Grubin and Samuel Moskowitz of blessed memory, Lillian, known as "Lil" to her late husband Robert, grew up in New York City, graduated from Newton High School and earned her B.A. degree from Akron University in social work. She was married 67 years to her beloved husband Robert Morris Schwartz when he passed four years ago. Lillian and Robert moved to Morristown in 1951 where Lillian became an active volunteer in Morristown civic life. In the 50s she worked to improve public education in Morristown through the PTAs and school board elections. In the 60s she worked successfully to integrate the elementary schools in Morristown. She was a lifelong member of the League of Women Voters. She sat on the zoning board in Morristown for many years helping to shape the growing complexity of the town.Lillian began her career as a caseworker for the County of Morris. Later she became and educator, first working as a cooperative nursery school teacher in Cedar Knolls and for over a decade she taught third grade at the Briarwood Elementary School in Florham Park, New Jersey. In the 70s she left teaching to begin a thriving small business in jewelry design. Lilo Designs were sold for over two decades in department stores in Morristown, Short Hills, Philadelphia and Milwaukee most noteworthy, Epsteins, Saks and Bonwit Teller. In 2011 the League of Women Voters of the United States awarded Lillian a Certificate of Recognition for "her many years of service to her community and our democracy through her work with the League, her focus on non-partisan education of voters about candidates and her encouragement of people to exercise their right to vote which stands in the most noble tradition of the League."

Lillian Schwartz is survived by her three daughters, Nancy Gorrell and her husband Joseph of Bridgewater, NJ, Susan Roistacher and her husband Charles of Bethesda MD, and Deborah Kravit of Milwaukee, Wis.; her seven grandchildren Lee Roistacher, Amy Pelletier, Sara Brenner, Elizabeth Gorrell, Michael Kravit, Emily Kravit, and Jonathan Kravit; and her seven great grandchildren, Caroline, Courtney, and Tatum Roistacher, Matthew, Thomas and Alex Pelletier, and Eli Brenner; and brother, Stanley Moss of Clinton Falls, NY.

The funeral service will be held at Temple Sholom, 594 North Bridge Street, Bridgewater, New Jersey on Wednesday, October 3, 2012 at 10:00 a.m., followed by a burial at Beth Israel Cemetery, 17 Ridgedale Ave., Cedar Knolls, NJ. Arrangements by Bruce C. VanArsdale Funeral Home, Somerville.
