Ray Tolman was born in Tooele County, Utah, USA in 1879, the eldest child of John and Emmeline Tolman. He was thirteen when the family immigrated to Alberta. He married Clara Edith Burrows and they had three sons, John Orson (Jack) (born in July 1902), Arthur Ralph (born March 1904) and Clarence Beverly (Buster) (born January 3, 1906). Clara contracted scarlet fever and died while giving birth to Buster.

In 1908, Ray married Rachel Ellen Elizabeth Beeson nee Lane, also known as Nellie. She was a widow with two children, Percy and Elsie. Ray and his boys lived in a two-story house, comprised of two rooms. After Ray and Nellie married, her one-room house from her homestead was moved over to join Ray's two-story house, and a new life began. Ray and others build the Tolman School in 1908. On March 22, 1909 Ray became Justice of the Peace and held that post until 1919. He was the Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages, as well as trustee on the Tolman School Board for many years. He was an active farmer and rancher, and did blacksmithing and farrier work.

In 1919, the family moved into Rumsey where Ray operated the International Harvester agency until 1922. That spring, Ray and family moved back to their farm located near the Red Deer River. They built a new addition onto the house consisting of three bedrooms, a bathroom, kitchen, pantry and large living room. A gasoline engine located in the basement powered the electric lights.
Rachele Ellen died Apr 10, 1932 in New Westminister, BC while visiting relatives. In 1933, Ralph died in the Drumheller Municipal Hospital while recuperating from an appendectomy. Ray and Buster took over Ralph's equipment and assumed the farming operations.

In 1947, Ray sold the old Tolman home and moved into Rumsey. He handled the agency for Elephant Brand Fertilizer for several years until retirement. He moved into the Senior Citizen's Lodge in Drumheller for a few years, then to one in High River. He died there in January 24, 1966, at the age of eighty-six. He is buried in the Rumsey Cemetery, Rumsey, AB.
