Walter Richard Schreiner Jr., cowboy, rancher, hunter, businessman and beloved father and husband, 60, passed away on July 17th 2014. He was born in San Antonio, TX to Charles Schreiner III and Audrey Phillips Schreiner on January 9th, 1954. His great grandfather was Captain Charles Schreiner. He married Teri Suzanne Richburg on November 5th, 1983 in San Antonio, TX.
He attended Alamo Heights High School and the University of Texas in Austin. He was fortunate enough to be able to spend his life doing what he loved the most, being outdoors and working on his family's ranch, the Y.O. As a young boy he spent his summers mending fences and working sheep and goats with his father and brothers. Later on, following in his father's footsteps, he developed a passion for longhorn cattle and became the head of the longhorn department at the ranch. He was the driving force behind the success of the longhorn division in the 80's and 90's.
Hunting was always Walter's biggest passion in life. An avid outdoorsman, he hunted extensively, starting at a very young age, taking trophies from North America all the way to Africa. In 2002, Walter fulfilled one of his life's dreams by beginning his own hunting operation on his ranch, the WRS, in Mountain Home. Nothing made him happier than to be on one of his ranches, sharing his love of the outdoors and God's creations, with his beloved family and friends. He especially enjoyed introducing hunting and sharing his extensive knowledge with the children of their numerous friends and others. He was greatly respected by many in the hunting and ranching industries.
Also, like his father, Walter was an avid collector of antiques, arrowheads, guns, trophy mounts, Indian artifacts, and western memorabilia. He was devoted to studying and preserving his family's historical heritage as well as his Texas heritage.
Walter's father, Charlie III, founded the Texas Longhorn Breeders Association and Exotic Wildlife Association. Walter was an honorary member of the Texas Rangers, Trophy Game Records of the World, the Texas Longhorn Breeders Association and many other organizations and boards. He was also a strong supporter of youth hunts and the Wounded Warriors Project.
Walter is preceded in death by his mother, Audrey Lee Phillips, his father, Charles Schreiner III and his brother, Louis Schreiner.
He is deeply loved and cherished by his wife, Teri, daughter Catherine and son-in-law Brand Daves, daughter Aimee & son Tres. He is also survived by brothers Charles Schreiner IV, wife Mary Helen and daughters Tiffany, Tessa and Tyndal, brother Gus Schreiner and wife Lori, daughters Audrey and Gazelle, and sister-in–law Chrisie Schreiner and sons Griffin, Lee and Luke.
Visitation will be held from 5-7pm on Tuesday, July 22nd at Grimes Funeral Chapels.
Funeral services will be held at 2pm, Wednesday, July 23rd at Impact Christian Fellowship in Kerrville with David Danielson and Bill Blackburn officiating. Burial will follow at the Y.O. Ranch.
