Norman Sylvester Ruffridge was born Feb. 7, 1919 in Decorah, the second of eight children born to Frank and Cora (Barth) Ruffridge.

He was baptized as an infant May 30, 1919 at St. John's Lutheran Church at Locust and confirmed in his faith June 4, 1933 at the Decorah Lutheran Church in Decorah.

He graduated from the eighth grade at Decorah and attended Decorah High School.

As a young boy, he then began working at the Hotvedt Bucher Shop.

In Nov. 1940, Norman Ruffridge enlisted in the Armed Services. He served with the U.S. Navy during World War II and was a Pearl Harbor survivor.

Ship's Cook First Class Norman Ruffridge was discharged a Chief Petty Officer in January of 1947.
Following his discharge, he was introduced to Neoma Marie Anderson by his brother, Orville Ruffridge.

They were united in marriage May 30, 1948 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa.
Norman Sylvester Ruffridge was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Cora Ruffridge; his oldest sister, Harriet Brom and his three brothers: Orville, Curtis and Gordon Ruffridge.
