Was captured during the Battle of Ft. Donelson (Feb 11-16, 1862) along with his two other brothers. The brothers were shipped north to the infamous Camp Douglas, outside Chicago, IL.

James was later transferred to a POW camp called Johnson's Island, Ohio and was eventually exchanged. Would continue to fight and would die unmarried at the Battle of Atlanta, Love Joy Station.
