After high school, Steve attended Lamar Community College on a baseball scholarship from 1992 to 1994. While at LCC, Steve was named to the dean's list. He also was named to the First Team All Region IX for two for two years in a row. Steven also was ranked eighth in the nation for home runs.
Steve's performance at LCC earned him a scholarship to ENMU at Portales, where he played out his last two years of eligibility. During this time, he received the following honors; Athletic Honor Roll 1994; First Team all-LSC; Designated Hitter; and "Collegiate Player to Watch", all in 1995.
Steve joined the Air Force in 1997. He was stationed at F.E. Warren Air Force Base, in Cheyenne, Wyo., at the time of his death. Wherever he went, Steve managed to play the game he loved. Steve had planned to make the Air Force a career. Steve is survived by his parents, of Alamogordo; a brother, Robert Marquez Jr., of Ft. Worth, Texas; a sister, Renee Marquez, and her companion, Neil Fairbanks, of Tularosa; maternal grandmother Socorro Cooksey, of Tularosa; godparents Richard and Josie Pacheco, of Alamogordo, and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Steve was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Rosalia and Elojio Marquez, and his maternal grandfathers; Steve Montoya, Flavio Lopez and William Herrera.
