Budgie Dale Keyes, 78

Crawfordsville - Budgie Dale Keyes, age 78 of Crawfordsville, died 4:03 p.m. Monday, October 17, 2011, following a short illness, in Franciscan St. Elizabeth East Hospital, Lafayette. Budgie was born in Wingate, April 8, 1933, the son of John & Dorothy Priebe Keyes. After his mother died May 30, 1933, he was raised by his grandparents, William and Jessie Keyes and later he made his home with Joe and Mary Wever. He was married to Lois Smith in Wingate on May 6, 1953, and she survives. Budgie attended Wingate High School and served in the U.S. Army with the 71st Infantry Medical Corps, 1953 until his honorable discharge in 1955. Following his discharge he and his wife operated a grain & livestock farm in Montgomery County. He retired in 1995. He was a member of the Elks in Crawfordsville and had a love of farming. He enjoyed playing cards, photography, sports, Montgomery County and Indiana History. Family genealogy was a passion for Budgie and he had accumulated over 12,000 family names. Budgie was connected to the community and was 'one of the more colorful' characters, who always wore a smile and usually creating laughter wherever he was. Budgie's cheerful disposition will be sadly missed by the Spartan Inn staff and crowd.

Surviving along with his wife Lois are two sons: Dennis (wife Kathy) Keyes of Carmel and Gerald (wife Jill) Keyes of Zionsville. A sister, Janet (husband Jack) Rouse, Sharon, SC. Four grandchildren: Jessica, Matthew, Aaron and Adam Keyes. Preceding him in death were: his parents, grandparents, Joe and Mary Wever. Sisters: Mary Jo Weaver Phillips, Katherine Wever Ryno and step brother Carl Keyes,

The family will receive guests, Thursday, October 20th, 2011, 5:00-8:00 p.m. at Family & Friends Funeral Home of Wingate. A celebration of Budgie's life will be held Friday, October 21st, 2011, at 11:00 a.m. with family members leading the service, at Family & Friends Funeral Home of Wingate. The family encourages you to bring and share memories of Budgie at his service. Memorial contributions may be directed to Franciscan St. Elizabeth East Hospital, where Budgie received excellent care or to American Heart Association.
