Judyth Dan Farmer Newman, 75, of De Berry, formerly of Malakoff, passed away Thursday night, July 17, 2014, as a result of a lengthy illness. A memorial service was held at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, July 22, 2014, at First Baptist Church in Cross Roads, Texas, with Bro. Frank Upchurch officiating. Cremation arrangements are by Jimerson-Lipsey Funeral Home.

Judy was born May 31, 1939, in Athens, Texas, to J.E. and Era Tolbert Farmer. She was raised in the Cross Roads Community and graduated from Malakoff High School in 1957, where she was a basketball standout. She attended Henderson County Jr. College, where she continued her successful basketball career. Judy and Terry Jack Newman wed in May 1958, and relocated to the Dallas area. She returned to Malakoff in 1969, where she began a career as a legal assistant. She began serving as Justice of the Peace of the 5th Precinct of Henderson County in 1979, and retired after more than 25 years in office. During her career, she also served as Municipal Judge for several local communities, including Trinidad, Kerens, Eustace, Tool, Log Cabin, and Malakoff. She later relocated to Carthage, to be near her daughter and grandsons, where she made many new friends and avidly supported the local high school football team. She was welcomed into the congregation of First Christian Church of Carthage.

Judy's love for life was contagious to those around her. Her love for her family and friends ran deep, particularly for her grandchildren. She also was passionate about her love for basketball, especially the Dallas Mavericks, entertaining around her pool, watching movies, reading books, and cooking.

Judy was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Hazel Dolores Farmer, who died in infancy; and a brother, James Allen "Bert" Farmer.

Judy is survived by her son, Terry Dan Newman and wife, Lisa, of Robinson; daughter, Cindy Pate and husband, Troy, of Buffalo; daughter, Traci Klysen of De Berry; granddaughters, Shelby Newman and Kendall Newman of Lubbock; grandson Matthew Pate of Buffalo; grandsons, Kane Klysen and Payton Klysen of Carthage; and brother, Bob Farmer and wife, Donna, of Athens. She is also survived by a son-in-law, Scott Klysen of Malakoff; special friend, Jenienne Bloodworth of Greenwood, LA; and many family and friends who will miss her greatly.

The family wishes to thank the staff of Heart's Way Hospice for their loving care and compassion.

Judy Newman, who served as Precinct 5 Justice of the Peace for parts of three decades, died Thursday at age 75.

Newman served her J.P. constituents out of a rickety, rundown, metal structure in Malakoff and consistently won re-election to the post.

“It’s the people’s choice and the people that I serve,” Newman said before the vote in one of her elections.

Newman held the office when it was a “part-time position.”

She was, nevertheless, on call 24 hours a day for inquest calls, arraignments, and other duties of the office. That included incidents such as a double murder in Trinidad in 1982 in which a returned couple was killed and their home burned.

Newman grew up in the Cross Roads area and graduated from Malakoff High School in 1957.

Her basketball talents landed her a spot to the Henderson County Junior College Lady Cardinals. Honors included “Most Athletic Girl.”

She moved to the Dallas area, but returned to Malakoff in 1969. Before running for J.P. Newman worked as a legal assistant, while finding time for terms on the Malakoff City Council. Other civic endeavors included vice president of the Malakoff Independent School District Parent Teachers Organization, secretary of the band club and president of the Malakoff Public Library Board.

After Newman retired as Justice of the Peace, she served for a time as municipal judge. In her career she held that position in several communities including Trinidad, Kerens, Eustace, Tool, Log Cabin, and Malakoff.

According to family members, after she retired, she moved to Carthage to be near her daughter and grandsons.
