He was a 1965 graduate of Gainesville High School, and was a second-year student at Santa Fe Junior College. He was a member of the Methodist church.
Surviving are his parents, Mr. & Mrs. Pat M. Heckard, Sr.; a brother, Pat Jr. of Gainesville; two sisters, Mrs. Mary Pat Sapp of Neptune Beach and Miss Ellen Heckard of Gainesville.
