Mrs. M. Genevieve Smith, 78, of Thurmont and formerly of Woodsboro, died Thursday, July 17, 2014 at St. Joseph's Ministries, Emmitsburg, following an extended illness.

Born September 7, 1935 in Johnsville, she was the daughter of the late Gordon and Gertrude Hoffman West. She was the wife of Milton "Sonny" Renner Smith, her husband of 58 years.

Mrs. Smith was a 1953 graduate of Walkersville High School and attended Strayer Business College, Baltimore. Genevieve was formerly employed as a secretary for Hoke Furniture Co., Thurmont, farmed with her husband, then was a school bus driver in Frederick County for 32 years, retiring in 2000. She received the Driver of the Year award in 1999/2000. She was an active member of Grace Rocky Hill Lutheran Church where she sang in the choir, was a member of the Willing Workers and ran the knickknack stand at the Rocky Hill festivals for many years. She was a charter life member and past president of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Glenn W. Eyler American Legion Post, Woodsboro and a past president and secretary of the auxiliary of the Woodsboro Volunteer Fire Co. She enjoyed traveling, country music, quilting, sewing and spending time with her family.

In addition to her husband she is survived by 3 daughters, Cheryl Wiles Winters and husband Alan (Bud) Winters, Wanda K. Routzahn and Melvenia R. Harding, all of Thurmont; 6 grandchildren, Matthew Wiles and Jessica; Zachary Harding and Lindsay, Ashton Harding, Madison Harding; Lane Routzahn, and Landon Routzahn; a great grandson, Jackson Wiles and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a sister, Melvenia West and brothers, Herman and Donald West.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 22 in Rocky Hill Lutheran Church, with Rev. Ann Schlossnagle, church pastor, officiating.

Interment will be in Rocky Hill Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Hartzler Funeral Home, 404 S. Main St., Woodsboro, 4-8 p.m. Monday, July 21. Memorial contributions may be made to Rocky Hill Lutheran Church, c/o Mary Ritchie, 11122 Renner Rd., Woodsboro, MD 21798. .
