He married first on 12 February 1948 in Needham, Massachusetts to Ora H. Dwelley who was born in Lee, Maine the daughter of Albert Dewelley and Bertha Budge.
They had no children and were divorced in 1954. She was murdered on 28 July 1954 at her home 78 Cypress Street, Brookline Massachusetts by a neighborhood boy with her own seamstress scissors.
He married second in late 1954 Boston, Massachusetts to Bambina Lena DiPalma born 6 February 1922 in Boston, Massachusetts the daughter of Felice DiPalma and Giovannia "Jennie" Montsanti.
When Joseph was 2 years 8 months old, his mother Mary Nee died on 8 May 1923. His father married Alice Effie Malone the daughter of Albert Malone and Mehitable Murchie. Alice was a good Irish lady who loved and raised young Joseph as if he were her very own son. Joseph loved her enough to list her as his mother on many documents he made out over the years.

Joseph Peter Schonarth Jr died 14 January 1970 at the Jamaica Plains VA Hospital, a suburb of Boston, Massachusetts, from an infection he obtained at the hospital after a minor exploratory surgery.
