DO NOT CONFUSE THIS Duncan J. Bullard (son of Giles M. Bullard) with the other Duncan J. Bullard of Cumberland County who married (first) Alice Honeycutt and (second) Stella Beard Lancaster! THAT Duncan J. Bullard was born in 1856 to James A. and Sarah Bullard, according to the 1860 and 1900 census.* THIS TINTYPE image of Duncan J. Bullard was my grandmother's. Her mother (Mary Elizabeth Bullard Cook) was THIS Duncan J. Bullard's sister.

THIS Duncan J. Bullard was born circa February 1860 to Giles M. Bullard and Elizabeth Culbreth Bullard of Flea Hill (Eastover), Cumberland County, NC according to the 1860 census, when he was aged four months old. He joined Salem Methodist Church (Flea Hill/Eastover) in 1875, according to "The History of Salem United Methodist Church."

According to Nancy Jackson Pleitt Fenner's book, "Descendants of Thomas William Holland and Milley Boyett," this Duncan J. Bullard (son of Giles Mitchell Bullard) married Ida Dees Spell on March 13, 1898.

They had a son named Dewey James Bullard born in January 1899. Duncan apparently died soon after, because he is not in the 1900 census with Ida and son Dewey James, Bullard, who are living with her father, Lewis Spell. Ida next married Valentine T. Baggett in November 1902 and had children with him, as well as raising her husband's children and her son Dewey. Mrs. Fenner states in her book that Duncan Bullard "was buried in the William A. Baggett Family Cemetery about 1 3/4 miles west of Salemburg at the south side of S.R. 1233 in Honeycutts Township, Sampson County, North Carolina." (Page 104) Currently there appears to be no gravestone for him.

After his father's death, Dewey James Bullard lived with Valentine T. Baggett (stepfather), mother, and step- and half-siblings, according to the 1910 census. Step-father Valentine Baggett looked after Dewey's portion of his grandfather Giles Bullard's estate (turpentine rights on some property GMB owned), according to court records.
