Henry P. Aiken's death certificate provided the following information: father Thomas B Aiken, mother unknown, born in Hardwick, MA, married worked as a painter, resided in state care for 32 years 2 onths and 12 days at the time of his death at age 79 yrs.


Henry was the son of Forester Berry (a slightly different name than death certificate but rest of info is the same) & Fanny (nee Wheeler) Aiken. He had two brothers; Charles Wheeler & David and four sisters Martha M., Mary Ann, Ellen Frances and Sarah Elizabeth Aiken. He lived in Hardwick MA with his family until 1865 when he enlisted in the US Army for a year as a substitute for a drafted resident of Maine. He served for a year as a private in the Maine 15th Infantry Company G. He married Carrie L. Gilmore in Hardwick MA on November 22, 1869. They lived together in 1870 in Boston.


Henry was committed by the Probate Court in Hardwick to the Worcester Lunatic Hosptial on Feb 15, 1878 then transferred to the Worcester Asylum for Chronic Insane on August 15, 1893. He resided at the Worcester Lunatic Hospital in 1880, Worcester Insane Asylum in 1900 and at the Grafton State Hosptial in 1920 according to the respective US Census reports.


Grafton hospital records had his status as married , which was probably recorded when he first entered the hospital.

Henry married Carrie L. Gilmore Nov. 22, 1869 in Worcester, MA.

Carrie filed for divorce in 1885 in Boston on grounds of desertion.

"Carrie L. Aiken vs. Henry P. Aiken cause- desertion

The libellant, whose maiden name was Carrie L. Gilmore, testified that she was married in Worcester in 1869 and came with her husband to live in Boston in 1870. he deserted her in Nov. 1874 and went back to Worcester. He left her under the plea that he was out of work. She had both written to him and pleaded with him personally to return and live with her and he refused. Since 1878 her husband has been confined in the Worcester Insane Asylum."

Case was uncontested and decision reserved.


Carrie died Nov. 22, 1885 and death recorded had M for married.
