Ray Alger, age 82 of Hendersonville passed away peacefully at home Saturday, April 19, 2009, after a long struggle with cancer. His wife Marcene Jones Alger and best friend Susie "the black lab" were at his side.
He was the son of the late Earle and Myrtle Alger of Gary Indiana and a US Marine who proudly served in WWII in Saipan as a Military Police. Last year he made a trip with the Honor Air to Washington and felt it was one of the best experiences of his life. Ray was always seen proudly wearing his U.S. Marine hat and would strike up a conversation with fellow Marines whenever possible.

He was preceded in death by his first wife Rosemary Witte. Ray worked in the Witte family auto business in Chicago for thirty seven years. He and Rosemary fell in love with Hendersonville during a vacation to Florida and retired to the area in 1980. With the help of family members, the Alger's built a home in Saluda, NC.
After Rosemary's death in 1989, he met and married Marcene Jones. They lived in Saluda and Hendersonville. They always enjoyed working on their home, making it "picture perfect". They could be found almost daily enjoying their work in the yard.

Ray was a kind hearted gentleman, whom was loved by his family members which includes: three daughters; Carol Pisat and her husband Robert, Cheryl Deckinga and her husband Henry, and Caren Lenderink and her husband Ben; five step-children, Gary Jones (Cindy. Donnie Jones (Doris), Gail Jones King (Steve). Diane Jones Grant (Tom) and Chat Jones (Judy); along with many grandchildren and great-grandchildren of which he was very proud.
A memorial service will be held at 10:00 on Wednesday, December 23, 2009 at Thos. Shepherd's Church Street Chapel with Chaplain Arthur Stagle officiating. Military rites will be conducted by: Hubert M. Smith American Legion Post #77, Hedrick-Rhodes VFW Post #5206, Chapter #14 of the DAV.
