He was the son of the late Earle and Myrtle Alger of Gary Indiana and a US Marine who proudly served in WWII in Saipan as a Military Police. Last year he made a trip with the Honor Air to Washington and felt it was one of the best experiences of his life. Ray was always seen proudly wearing his U.S. Marine hat and would strike up a conversation with fellow Marines whenever possible.

He and Rosemary fell in love with Hendersonville during a vacation to Florida and retired to the area in 1980. With the help of family members, the Alger's built a home in Saluda, NC.
After Rosemary's death in 1989, he met and married Marcene Jones. They lived in Saluda and Hendersonville. They always enjoyed working on their home, making it "picture perfect". They could be found almost daily enjoying their work in the yard.
