Agnes died at her home in Sunbeam. She had a stroke and never recovered. Following is her obituary.
Funeral services for Mrs. W.O. Speer, widely known and highly respected resident of Mercer County are being held this afternoon, Wednesday November 10, at the Sunbeam United Presbyterian Church with the Rev.H.T. Melville, former pastor, officiating.
The following detailed obituary was prepared by members of the family and intimate friends:
Agnes Isabel Dobbin Speer, the third of four daughters born to David and Eliza Stott Dobbin, was born in Somonauk, DeKalb County February 24, 1857. After a week's serious illness, she quietly entered eternal life, Monday, November 8, 1937,in the home in Mercer County where she had resided for 51 years. Her parents were pioneer settlers in the neighborhood of Sandwich, Illinois, her father immigrated to America from County Antrim, Ireland. Her Mother ws a native of Washington County, New York.
The Dobbin history relates that the family originated in France but was driven from that country during the Huguenot persecution, taking refuge in Scotland, and later crossing the Irish Sea to Ireland.
It was inevitable that families with this background should be devoutly Christian, and in such a home Agnes Dobbin was reared. At an early age, she was united with the Somonauk United Presbyterian Church of which her father for many years an elder. Upon her removal to Mercer County, her membership was transferred to the Sunbeam United Presbyterian Church where she served her master faithfully for 54 years. As a young woman she attended Monmouth College later teaching school several years in her home community.
She was married in her parents home to Walter O. Speer on March 15, 1883. and they established their home on a farm east of Sunbeam. They were the parents of three children: Edna at home, Ernest D.(Edna and Ernest were twins) and Mrs. Frank McClellan both residing near. It was her great joy to celebrate with her husband their golden wedding anniversary on March 15, 1933, entertaining a large group of friends and relatives that day.
Mrs. Speer was known for her loyalty and devotion to home, family, and church for her interest in the advancement of God's Kingdom. She will be missed by friends and loved ones but will be remembered by the fruits of her long and useful life. For many years she was a worker in the Missionary Society and the Woman's Christian Temperance Union and in each of these of these organizations she was faithful.
Besides the husband and children, she is survived by seven grandchildren, Mrs. Keith Chatterton of Rock Island, Mrs. Paul Johnson of Pasadena, CA., Miss Ernestine Speer of Newark, N.J., Stanley Speer of Sunbeam, Lehman, Speer, and Wallace McClellan of Sunbeam. She also leaves two sisters Mrs. Sarah Robinson of Viola, Kansas, and Mrs. Emma Robinson of Long Beach, CA. Another sister Mrs. Jane Moore passed away 3 years ago. Pallbearers: R.E.Winger,Glenn Gilmore, Keith Chatterton, Ralph McCreight, John Pinkerton, and James Braucht.
