St. Louisan Cited Posthumously For Braving Nazi Fire:
The Silver Star has been awarded, posthumously, to a St. Louis infantryman for gallantry in action, his parents have learned from the War Department. He is: S. SGT. William Wayne Crutcher, 25, son of Mr. and Mrs. Herbert R. Crutcher, 3405 Leola av.

Sgt. Crutcher was in the area of Gronebach, Germany, April 4, when American forces were halted by deadly fire from concealed anti-tank and self-propelled guns. Disregarding the danger, Sgt. Crutcher exposed himself to the fire in an attempt to locate the cannon. He lost his life, but his comrades, through his action, found and knocked out the guns and took the objective.

Sgt. Crutcher also received the Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster and the Purple Heart.
