Rev. Peter Schaaf died at Lansford
Lansford, Jan 20 - Rev. Peter Schaaf, pastor of the Catholic church here the last four years died at the rectory, at 9:15 o'clock last night of pneumonia with which he was stricken ten days ago. His demise was not unexpected and his parents were fully acquainted with his condition, hope of his recovery having been given up yesterday.
Rev. Schaaf was the son of Jacob Schaaf, of St. Clair, and was about 30 years old. He was born at New Philadelphia, and removed with his father to St. Clair when he was quite young. He was educated in the public schools of that place, and subsequently entered St. Charles Borromeo Seminary at Overbrook, Philadelphia, where he completed his course of study and where he was ordained about six years ago. He then went to Mauch Chunck (now Jim Thorpe), where he served as curate under Rev. Heinan (Heinen).
While engaged here, he made a special study of the Slovak, Polish and Hungarian languages and his progress was so rapid that in less than two years he could converse freely or preach in any of these tongues. About four years ago he was placed in charge of the Slovak congregation at Lansford and had been very successful in his work. He was beloved by all of them and when the news of his death was made public last night the greatest of sorrow was manifested. Rev. August Wachter, pastor of the church of the Holy Family, Shenandoah, was with him during his last hours.
The sad news of Fr. Schaaf's death was received with much sorrow in Shenandoah last evening. Many relatives reside here, including Peter and Joseph Schaaf and Mrs. Anne Schmidt, first cousins; and the Noll and Graeber families.
