David was the patriarch of a distinguished family. A Philadelphia merchant who moved to Camden, New Jersey when appointed Assistant Collector of the port.

Eldest son, Dr. Theodore Heyl, graduated from the University of Pennsylvania, and received an appointment in the U.S. Navy as associate surgeon.

Daughter, Helen Louise married U.S. Senator, William Joyce Sewell, who distinguished himself during the Civil War and received the Congressional Medal of Honor in 1896 for his leadership at Chancellorsville in 1863.

Son, Colonel Edward Miles Heyl, Inspector General of the U.S. Army, 1885-1889

Son, Lieutenant Colonel Charles Pettit Heath Heyl, Inspector General of the U.S. Army 1902-1904. He won the Congressional Medal of Honor in 1898 for he gallant action in 1876, against the Sioux Indians near Ft. Hartsuff, Nebraska.

They had three daughter who never married:
Carolina Julia Heyl 1845-1851
Amanda Hobson Heyl 1846-1924
Mary Heath Heyl 1848-1925
