He enlisted in the Royal Australian Navy in 1928 and served for twelve years as a Seaman Torpedoman on board HMAS Sydney (II). He was one of the 645 crew who were killed during the HMAS Sydney's engagement with the German auxiliary cruiser HSK Kormoran in the Indian Ocean off the Western Australian coast.
