Mrs. Irene Woods, 95, of Fayetteville, GA and formerly of Cuba, OH and New Vienna, OH, passed away peacefully Sunday, May 28, 2023, with her daughters and other family members at her side in the Hope Center Memory Care in Fayetteville, GA.

Irene was born April 11, 1928, in Verner, WV. She is preceded in death by her loving husband, Faymon D. Woods; her parents, Tressie Browning Backus and Joseph A. Backus; brothers Ralph Backus and Melvin Backus; sister Grace Backus Speakman; and special friend Neil Felheim.

She is survived by brothers William Backus, Robert Backus and special brother-in-law Jerry Speakman (Julie); special sister-in-law Patti Backus; daughters Pamela Woods Hatcher (Jerry), Martha Woods Valliant (Bill) and Judith Woods Wheaton; grandsons Jason Hatcher (Kirsten), Seth Siders (Emily), Joshua Hatcher (Kristine) and Joseph Hatcher (Caitlin); granddaughters Jennifer Siders Kelley (Bryan) and Melissa Valliant Holcombe (Don); 15 great grandchildren; 1 great great granddaughter; and many special cousins, nieces and nephews.

Irene attended New Vienna High School where she met her soulmate, Faymon Woods. They married at a young age in 1944 when Faymon was drafted into the US Army during WWII. Irene became a skilled, hard-working partner on the farm, operating the tractors and trucks. They lived, loved and worked together 24/7 for 68 years, until Faymon's death on December 2, 2012. She was an excellent cook, homemaker, seamstress, furniture refinisher, and loving mother and grandmother.

A celebration of life and memorial service will be held Saturday, Sept. 9 at 2pm at Auburn Community Christian Church (formerly Auburn Methodist Church), 10269 Careytown Rd., New Vienna, OH 45159. Lunch will be served at the church immediately after the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made in Irene's name to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, Auburn Community Christian Church or your local hospice organization.
