Jane Carter Pierson
Mrs. Jane Carter Pierson, age 86, of Retta, PA. passed away on Monday morning, July 14, 2014 at the V.N.A. Hospice of Lackawanna County, in Scranton, PA.
She was born in Meshoppen, PA. on March 6, 1928 the daughter of the late Charles W. VanGorden who passed away in 1981 and Bethel Howells VanGorden who passed away in 1964. Growing up near Meshoppen, she was a graduate of the Meshoppen High School class of 1946. For many years, she was married to Orell D. Carter, and together they owned and operated a farm in Retta, PA. After the death of Mr. Carter on June 11, 1976, Jane later married Raymond (Rip) L. Pierson. Mr. Pierson passed away on June 19, 1996. After all of the years while living in Retta, Jane was very active in the Retta community and was a member of the Retta United Methodist Church. She was also a member of the Meshoppen Chapter #70 of the Eastern Star. In her spare time she enjoyed gardening, playing golf and most of all she enjoyed spending time with her family, especially being with and taking care of her grandchildren. Surviving are her children, Cheryl Wiles of Laceyville, PA.; Susan Ball of Montrose, PA; Reid Cater of Stevensville, PA, and a son in law Charlie Dodge of Laceyville, PA. She is also survived by 5 grandchildren, Rob Wiles, of Laceyville, PA; Shantel Gamble of Montrose, PA; Dustin Ball of Mayfield, PA; Anson Carter of Lynn, PA; and Danielle Carter of Retta, PA and her great-grandchildren, Taylor Goff; Neil Gamble and Malorie Brown., and many nieces and nephews. Besides her husband's and her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Beth Dodge on October 22, 2010; and a son in law, Larry Wiles on November 1, 2008. Memorial services will be held on Saturday, July 19, 2014 at 1:00 PM at the Retta United Methodist Church, with Rev. Rick Darling of the church officiating. Interment will be at the convenience of the family in the Overfield Cemetery in Meshoppen, PA. Arrangements were made through the Sheldon Funeral Home, Main St., Meshoppen, PA.
