"As the sun was casting its first gleams over the eastern hills on Thursday morning, Nov. 4th, the long life of our well known townsman, John J. Bulford, was ended. He died peacefully at his home in this village surrounded by a few members of the family, retaining his senses to the last. He had been ailing for several weeks with the infirmities of old age, but was not wholly confined to the bed until within the past few days.

John Jacob Bulford was born in New York City in 1819 and resided there for a number of years, when the family removed to New Haven, Connecticut and subsequently to the Wyoming Valley, settling at Wilkes-Barre.

In 1847 Mr Bulford came to Dallas and established himself in the blacksmith business, occupying a shop about where the Lehigh Valley station now is. He resided for several years in a house near the spot now occupied by the W.B. & N. railroad depot. He was the pioneer blacksmith of this section and his shop was known far and wide.

He was an industrious and obliging man, a good mechanic and possessed of far more than average intelligence. For some years he held the office of Justice of the Peace, and probably from this circumstance he received the title of Judge, by which he was known all through the county.

He was careful and conscientious in the discharge of his duties as a peace officer, and always advised his neighbors to keep out of the law. In politics Mr. Bulford was a Democrat of the old school, but for the past few years took but little part in political affairs.

Mr. Bulford is survived by three sons, Samuel, Foster and Frank. His wife, whose maiden name was Rachel Delong, was killed on the
L. V. R. R. several years ago.

The funeral services will take place at the house this Saturday afternoon at two o'clock, with interment in the Rice Cemetery. Rev. James Menninger of Lehman will officiate. Friends desiring to see the remains will call at the house at any time after ten o'clock."
