John was the son of William Province, an Irish immigrant. He married Mary "Polly" Mitchel in 1771 in Mecklenburg, North Carolina. They went west as pioneers and settled in central Kentucky. They had seven children: William, Sarah, Alexander, John, Anna Nancy, Mary Polly, and Rebecca.
John served with North Carolina Monongalia Milia during the Revoluntary War.
