Callahan Jr., David J. 86 7/11/1922 4/23/2009 David Joseph "D.J." Callahan passed away quietly at his home in Tigard after a difficult battle with cancer. Dave was born in Portland and grew up in the Grant Park neighborhood. He attended The Madeleine Grade School and graduated from Columbia Preparatory in 1940. After three years at the University of Portland, he enlisted in the U.S. Army to fight in the Pacific theater of World War II. Dave proudly served with the amphibian engineers in the South Pacific. His outfit was the 593rd engineers, boat and shore, Company A. His military service ended when he was paralyzed from a bout with polio. He eventually recovered, but suffered from the complications for the rest of his life. After the war, Dave accepted a position with Kerr Gifford Company, which was purchased by Cargill Inc., a grain trading company. In 1952, he was transferred to The Dalles where he was manager of Cargill's grain elevator until he retired in 1983. In 1991, he and his wife, Rosemary, decided to move back to the Portland metro area to be closer to their six children. Dave's unwavering commitment to the Catholic church was evidenced by his contributions and efforts around the construction of three new churches during his lifetime, active involvement in the Knights of Columbus and leadership within the parish council in The Dalles. While Dave was not a rancher, he was often recognized for his significant contributions to the Oregon Cattlemen's Association. Dave is survived by his wife of 62 years, Rosemary (Hagemann); children, John, Kip and his wife, Jean; Tom and his wife, Martha; Mary "Murph;" Teri and her husband, Peter; and Rich. He is also survived by his 11 grandchildren, Erin and her husband, Jim, Dan, Brenna, Joe, Paddy, Sean, Brian, Clare, Michael, Tommy and Macauley. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 30, 2009, in St. Clare Church, 8535 S.W. 19th Ave., Portland. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests remembrances to St. Vincent de Paul at St. Anthony Church in Tigard or Willamette Falls Hospice. Riverview Abbey Funeral Home, directors.
