U.S. Congressman. He moved to Ohio, with his parents in 1831, graduated from Wesleyan University Delaware and taught school in northwestern Missouri, in 1850. He studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1851 and practiced law in Glenwood, Iowa. He was judge of the circuit court of Iowa, in 1852, moved to Nebraska Territory in 1854 and continued the practice of law in Nebraska City, in 1855. He was a member of the Nebraska Territorial Council in 1856 and a member of the Nebraska Territorial House of Representatives in 1858. In 1859, he moved to moved to Denver, Colorado and upon the admission of the Colorado Territory, he was elected as a Conservative Republican to the Thirty-seventh and Thirty-eighth Congress, serving (1861-65). Not a candidate for re-nomination, he was Colorado Secretary of State, in 1867, Postmaster of Denver, (1869-74) and a member of the first Colorado State Senate, (1876-95).
