Joe Glyn Durham, of Groesbeck, passed away at Austin on Sunday, July 13, 2014, where he had been living the past few weeks to be near his daughter. He was 86.
Visitation will be Friday, July 18, from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. at the Groesbeck Funeral Home Chapel.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, July 19, 2014 at the Groesbeck Funeral Home Chapel, with Brother Richard Williams of the Church of Christ of Groesbeck officiating. Burial will follow in Cobb Cemetery.
Joe was born March 24, 1928 on the farm near Thornton, to Otis Durham and Merle Currey Durham. He grew up on the farm at Beulah, and graduated from Groesbeck High School where he had been a star athlete in football, basketball, and track. In 1946, he was drafted into the Army, and was in the military police stationed in Korea. After his discharge, he began his career and went to work after a few years with Hudson Engineering where he was a purchasing agent.
Joe was united in marriage with Doris Clark on January 20, 1956. They lived in Bellaire where Doris taught school, and he eventually retired from McDermott Co. Joe had many skills with which he kept busy and productive. When he came home from work, he would spend time on refinishing antique furniture, and he taught himself how to build and repair all types of clocks. He became very skilled with clocks, repairing wall, mantle and grandfather clocks, and he built grandfather clocks for his home and his daughter.
In the early eighties, Joe and Doris retired and moved back to a home built at Twin Bridges on land that had been in the family over one hundred years. He continued his hobby of refinishing antique furniture and repairing clocks. He was a loving husband and father and a good man, a faithful member of the Church of Christ, and a good friend and neighbor to many. He was a loving caregiver for his wife Doris during the last four years of her failing health which kept her homebound. He delighted in doing good things for others, especially his daughter. He loved to help her find items to paint in her craft business. During the last few years when arthritis prevented his furniture and clockwork, he made "clothespin" crosses, and gifted many people with his handiwork. Sunday mornings, he could always be found in "his seat" at church, and after losing his wife, he enjoyed going to the Senior Citizens for lunch. He was a good friend and neighbor, who took the time to care for others and share his smile and dry humour. This good man will be dearly missed by his daughter and those who knew him.
Mr. Durham was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Ellis Durham; and in 2010, his beloved wife of 54 years, Doris Durham.
He is survived by his daughter, Jana Durham Juler of Austin; brother and sister-in-law, Guy and Lou Durham of Groesbeck, as well as other extended family
