East German politician. A communist activist in his youth, he was imprisoned during much of the Nazi period. When freed in 1937, he went to Spain to lead the XI International Brigade. In the early 1940's he was again imprisoned by the Gestapo and sent to Mauthausen Concentration Camp. After the war, he became a leading East German politician and diplomat and a member of the executive committee (Politburo) of the Socialist Unity Party of Germany.
