Union City woman killed County crash hospitalizes five
Five persons, all age 59 or older, remained in either serious or critical condition in city hospitals today following a two-car collision Wednesday which caused the death of a Union City woman.
The victim was Mrs. Martha B. Roper, 63, of Union City Rt. 2.
Kentucky State Police said the mishap occurred 8.9 miles west of Paducah at the intersection of Ky. 286 and Ky. 726, the McKendree Church Road. The cars collided shortly after noon.
Mrs.Roper was a passenger in a car driven by Mrs. Juanita Shaw, 59, Union City Rt. 5. The car was traveling north on Ky. 726 and police said it failed to stop at the intersection.

Mrs. Shaw and two other passengers were taken to Lourdes Hospital. Mrs. Shaw was listed today in serious condition, as was Paul T. Shaw, 63, who was seated in the rear of the demolished auto. Murrell Roper, 63, Union City Rt. 2, seated in the rear on the right, was in critical condition.
Their car was struck in the right side by a car driven by Othello Kelly, 60, Dayton, Ohio. He was driving west on Ky. 286.

Kelly was treated and released, but his wife, Mrs. Sadie Kelly, 62, Dayton, was in serious condition. Another passenger, Mrs. Edith Louther, 71, of Cairo, 111., was in satisfactory condition.
Members of the McCracken County rescue squad had to work for more than an hour to free the occupants of the Shaw vehicle.
Mrs.Martha B. Roper, 63, of Union City, died in collision between this car and a Cadillac driven by a Dayton, Ohio, man shortly after noon Wednesday. The accident occurred in Southwest McCracken County. Mrs. Roper was sitting on the passenger side in the front seat, near where the initial Impact was made.
A rescue squad official said a wrecker was used to pry the doors off the car to free the injured and recover the body of Mrs. Roper. Authorities said the right front of the car, where Mrs. Roper was sitting, received the most damage. Deputy Coroner Jerry Beyer pronounced her dead at the scene at 1 p.m. He said she died of severe chest injuries. The body was taken to White-Ranson Funeral Home in Union City. Police were summoned to the scene by a state Bureau of Highways crew working about 100 feet from the crash site.

State police said no charges had been filed.
