ELLEN FRANCES GRAY MASSEY passed away July 13, 2014, after a short illness. She is survived by a son David Massey and his wife Deborah of Columbia, Missouri; a daughter Ruth Massey of Rogersville, Missouri; a daughter Fran Massey and her husband John Bartolo of Hobe Sound, Florida; a sister and brother-in-law, Carolyn and Lester Thornton of Nevada, Missouri; many nieces, nephews; great nieces and nephews; great-great-nieces and nephews; and two great-great-great-nieces. Ellen is preceded in death by her husband David Lane Massey; her parents, Chester and Pearl Gray; parents-in-law, Arnett and Cora Massey; sisters, Miriam Gray, Kathryn Dudley and Gertrude Toth; brothers, Harold, Ralph and Vernon Gray. Ellen was born in Nevada, Missouri and grew up in Vernon County, Missouri and Washington, D.C. She was an Extension Home Agent, a teacher and a writer. She started "Bittersweet," a quarterly magazine about the Ozarks researched, written and published by students in Lebanon High School. She has had twenty-nine books and many short stories published and one play produced. Ellen has won several awards for writing including being inducted into the Writers Hall of Fame of America in 1995 and the Lebanon, Missouri Wall of Honor in 2012 and winning the Western Writers Spur Award for her youth book, "Papa's Gold" this year.
