US Congressman. A member of the Democratic Party, he served the 25th (1955 to 1963), 21st (1963 to 1973), 24th (1973 to 1975) and 22nd Congressional Districts in the United States House of Representatives. After high school graduation, he worked for his family's auto sales business. During World War II, he served as a combat engineer with the United States Army and later as a pilot with the United States Air Force. He saw action in the European Theater. Upon his return home, he established his own aviation business. During his tenure in Congress, he was nicknamed "The Prince of Pork" because of his efforts to obtain federal dollars and use them for projects in his elected district.
